Standard Japanese is like standard English, You dont have to live in Penn. to hear standard English you can go just about anywhere... Except really remote areas A.K.A WV and Eastern KY. Same thing with Japan...dont limit!
I personally would like to give Shibuya and Ginza another chance though and I will. I am saying you are missing out really really bad if you just stay in Otaku land.

Hokkaido has some really cool animals. Fuzzy monkeys, Dancing cranes and the massive Hawks that fly from Russia or Nothern Japan! Also Sapporo Japan, Located in Hokaiddo) has the best ramen.
Each city has a particular dish that its very famous for. Tokyo has a pancake kind of thing thats made of vegtables and squid, Nagoya has fried shrimp, Osaka has takoyaki (Octopus in a batter ball)...basically pick a city, pick your poison!
